Chapter Fourteen

ROSE ALLOWED HER anger at her dad to fuel her search, rather than slow her down. Now that she was thinking about her, she realized that she hadn’t seen Aviana all day, even when she was searching both wings for witches to sniff.

She did not want to ask Winston where she was and draw attention to the fact she was looking for her. Maybe she was lurking around Malakai’s room, since that was her job, and he was probably there to be catered to at this hour.

On her way to the stairs, she realized she still needed to see Chandra again about the dirt results. Not now. Now Cory was alone on a dark realm, and she didn’t want some hungry monster to come along and take her traitor. The words were on her lips to ask Jarrod to remind her to see Chandra, when she realized he hadn’t rejoined her since Chip chased him off.

Gwen was standing in the hall downstairs, talking with a small group of advisors. She looked up, and then rushed over when she saw Rose come in.

Rose allowed her to hold her a moment and heal her. There was a lot of anger, and it could get distracting.

“Thank you, grandma. I’m fine now, that feels much better. I was just heading to see my brother.” She tried to look more dejected and less like a woman with a plan.

Gwen stepped back and frowned. “He’s upstairs. Sweetie, whatever you need. Please, you know me or Sebastian can soften this for you. Even Destiny or Lucian, we will all be here for you however we can.”

“You have already helped, greatly. I just need to know if Malakai can see something for me. Then I think some alone time should help.” She shifted her weight, thinking the night might run long. “Can you tell Lucian I am just not up for any practice tonight? I will reschedule something with him when I feel better.” The fact she was rescheduling her rendezvous with her lover’s wife did not escape her.

Gwen agreed to tell him, and after another long embrace, Rose started up the stairs. When she spotted Aviana alone, a few doors away from the bedchambers, she sighed with relief. Maybe the gods would let something be easy. Now she needed to get Aviana to sneak off with her, without actually being stopped by Malakai, or anyone else.

Aviana looked her way. Rose smiled at her and waved her over.

“Malakai’s in his room, in the vision chamber.” Aviana had a sweet tone and looked at Rose with large, doe-like, brown eyes.

“Good, you can help me. I’m working on a surprise for him.” She reached out and took her hand. “Quickly, before we are seen.”

They walked fast toward the back exit, and Rose didn’t slow down until they were away from the wing. While they walked, Rose eliminated her as the curse witch. The witches that it could be was shrinking to the point that Rose wasn’t even sure what the motive might be.
